THE MUST-HAVE GUIDE TO MAKING THE BEST BABY REGISTRY. EVER.

This is the essential guide to having the BEST baby registry experience ever! All the stuff you need. None of the stuff you don’t. As a first-time mother of twins, I had no idea what I was getting myself into. Here’s a download-able version of the registry list that I found to be the most helpful. (There’s a bonus for you in there too!) I’m going to go over the list in more detail throughout this post. Learn from me, ladies!!

This is the best. guide. EVER!!

The ULTIMATE checklist for a baby registry made by a twin mom. Plus free printable! | Mommie and Wee

First of all… Where should you have your registry?

1. Target. My number one choice for a registry is Target, hands down. They have absolutely everything you need, and some! Also, there’s Targets everywhere which makes it easy for family and friends who may not be nearby. They can purchase something to ship, or for you to pick up in-store.

Mommie Tip #1: Target also gives a gift bag to all registry openers. Go to your local Target and ask about it at the customer service desk. It has coupons and samples! Great way to save money in the future!

2. Babies-R-Us. They have a great registry for moms who want more-than-your-average-joe type of registry. They have techy items that I’ve never even heard of, a HUGE selection of high-end nursery furniture, and excellent customer service when shopping for your registry in-store. They also offer a V.I.B. program (Very Important Baby, pretty clever!) that racks up dollars for you to spend, kind of like a debit card.

Mommie Tip #2: Babies-R-Us also offers a gift bag to registrants. Go to the customer service desk and ask about it! Yay coupons and free stuff!

3. Burlington Coat Factory. Yes, Burlington. I didn’t know they did baby registries either. But, they do! And they do them well! They have most of the things that Target has, but cheaper! AND, they have a double discount program. If you purchase two of the same item, you get a 10% discount! (That’s for all you twin mom’s out there!)

Now that you’ve signed up… What should you add to your registry?

1. Nursery Items. All the essentials here… crib and it’s accessories. If you have room, a changing table and dresser are great to have!

Mommie Tip #3: Make sure your crib bedding set does NOT include a bumper. If it does, please do not use it.No matter how cute it is.

Bumpers, extra pillows, stuffed animals, even blankets have been linked to SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome) when placed in cribs with newborns. So NO BUMPERS! I’m surprised they haven’t stopped selling them… but that’s a whole ‘nother story.

2. Feeding essentials. Get all the obvious stuff. You can skip the different bottle sterilizers on the market now-a-days. Just run those bad boys through the dishwasher (extra hot water!!) and that will do just fine. If you plan to breast feed, get a pump that is automatic, with two nipples. Also, BUY FORMULA! Even if you plan on solely breast feeding, get a container or two. You never know if you’ll need it. I planned to breast feed, and that went out the window within weeks. So much for that…

Mommie Tip #4: Check with your insurance company before buying a pump. Most companies have pregnancy programs which include breast pumps for qualified members. (I’m all about saving money!!!)

If you plan to formula feed, join the memberships that Similac and Enfamil offer. They send you coupons and keep you updated throughout your pregnancy with weekly baby tidbits. That was Mommie Tip #5 by the way.

3. Travel Gear. This stuff is pretty obvious. I opted for the infant car seat over the convertible ones. If you purchase a convertible car seat, you will need to purchase an insert for it to accommodate for the itty-bitty noggin your baby will have. When looking for car seats, make sure to get one that has a detachable base. This makes it much easier when loading baby in and out of the car. You install the base the first time you use the car seat, and after that, you just pop the seat in and out. No hassling with strapping it in every time. Now, for the diaper bag, get one that has tons of pockets and lots of room on the inside. It will come in handy as your diaper bag will turn into your I’ve-got-too-much-stuff-to-carry-a-purse bag. Also, get one in a cute pattern, that will go well with your wardrobe. You’ll be carrying this thing EVERYWHERE. Got to have something you’ll actually want to carry.

4. Changing Equipment. Obviously, add diapers to your registry! Diapers, diapers, and more diapers! I received so many diapers at my baby shower, I didn’t have to buy any for the first four months. (Did I mention I have twins?! That’s ALOT of diapers!) And with diapers come wipes. Lots and lots of wipes. Also nice to have a Diaper Genie so the smell of dirty diapers doesn’t take over your humble abode.

Mommie Tip #6: Join the rewards programs with Pampers and Huggies. Each box of diapers/wipes you buy has a rewards code on it. Enter it in to their rewards program website, and you receive points, which you can trade in for a wide-selection of goodies. More free stuff!!

5. Bathing Accessories. It’s great to add the Johnson & Johnson bathtime gift sets to your registry. They include everything you need for bathing baby. Also, hooded towels make it easy to dry baby head-to-toe, as they get cold really quickly. A baby tub is good to have as the baby grows, but, for now you can use a shallow plastic tub. They’ll give one to you when you leave the hospital. (Another money-saving mommie tip!! What’s that, number 7?!)

6. Clothes for Baby. Onesies will become your new best friend. Long-sleeve, short-sleeve, striped, polka dotted–just get lots of onesies. That way you don’t have to do laundry every two days. When getting PJs, make sure to get the footed night sets with a zipper, not buttons. Trust me, when you’re up at 4 o’clock in the morning, you’ll thank me for that. And Swaddlers… Oh, they’ll be your second best friend! They come with velcro so it’s super simple to wrap baby up, nice and snug! They trick baby into feeling like they are back inside the womb, so they’ll sleep longer. Who knew!!

7. Health and Safety Items. A first aid kit will have everything you need. The one I picked up included a miniature bottle which made it easy to give medicine to my girls without them spitting it all out. Great to have! Saline spray and gas drops come in handy for congested babies, too.

Well Mom, that’s all I got for ya. This should help you with your registry planning! Feel free to add to my list! That’s what registries are for! Go ahead–Request that uber-cool baby spa with the detachable water hose! I hope you get it!

Silly me! I’ve never heard of pacifier wipes. I wrote a post a while ago about keeping Diaper Bag Lists on your bag so you never forget anything. If you forget something big, like diapers, you are in.trouble.

OMG. That is soooo smart! I usually just keep mine packed, so I don’t even have to think about it before I leave the house. But, yes girl! Pacifier wipes will be your new best friend! Gotta have them! You can get them at WalMart or Target, in the baby section of course. xChels

Great tips! I also keep a couple of those plastic store bags in my bag. That way when there’s a diaper explosion, you can put the yucky clothes in there instead of worrying about putting them in your nice diaper bag.

vanilla-butter-pound-cake

Vanilla Butter Pound Cake

I sure love me some pound cake. Any kind of pound cake will do, but a classic vanilla pound cake is always my go to. It can be a base recipe–add a glaze, swirl in some jam, or layer it with cream cheese! You can’t go wrong! Here’s my recipe for the most delicious, buttery, vanilla pound cake!

Pound Cake-pinterest
Step numero uno: gather butter, sugar, vanilla, eggs, milk, flour, baking powder, salt, and sour cream. You’ll want to grab them early in the day, so the cold ingredients can come to room temperature. Makes for a better cake :)

pound cake, recipe, dessert, cake

When I decided to make this cake, my butter wasn’t quite soft enough to bake with. I obviously didn’t follow my own advice… So while I waited, I decided to make some lunch! For me AND the girls ;) I’ll post about this recipe soon!

lunchlunch

So after lunch, and a couple diaper changes, I came back to finish up my pound cake. In a mixing bowl, I combined the dry ingredients and set that aside. This step wasn’t quite picture worthy, so no picture. Sorry! I then creamed together the butter and sugar. I’ve got a picture of that one!

pound cake, recipe, dessert, cake

Then I added the vanilla and eggs, one at a time. Then, some flour and some milk, alternating between the two until they were all mixed in. It’ll look like this when it’s done.

pound cake, recipe, dessert, cake

Now, remove the mixture from the mixer (tongue twister) and fold in the sour cream. Notice, I said fold. Don’t stir it in or else you’ll loose the air that was mixed into your batter, resulting in a dense cake. Not yummy! It’ll look like like this if done correctly… Light and air-y!

pound cake, recipe, dessert, cake

Then pour the mixture into your greased baking dishes (in this case I used 8″ cake pans), and bake at 300º for about 2 hours. It’ll look like this when it comes out of the oven.

pound cake, recipes, desserts, cake

Check out this post to learn the tricks I used to make sure this cake turned out perfect!

Allow the cake to cool on a cookie rack and there you have it! Top with fresh cream, berries, a glaze, whatever you want. You’re sure to enjoy this decadent treat!! Try this recipe at home and let me know what you think! And be sure to check out this picnic dessert that features this vanilla butter pound cake AND red velvet cake! What could be better?!

4th of July Picnic Dessert!

Summer is my favorite time of year. One of the reasons why is because I love going to see the fireworks with my family. We usually pack a picnic lunch and make a whole day out of it! So here’s my recipe for the dessert I am going to make for this year’s picnic, what I like to call Firecracker Cake! It’s really just red velvet cake, layered with vanilla pound cake, and cream cheese frosting! Oh, and some Americana sprinkles too! Enjoy!

firecracker, fireworks, 4th of july, cake, desserts, recipes

To make this jar-full-o-yum, I used my signature recipes for red velvet cake and vanilla butter pound cake. Check out this post (and this one too) for the real baking instructions. But for this, I’ll just give you a general overview. For both recipes, I halved the original since I wouldn’t need as much.

To make the red velvet, I grabbed some ingredients, [flour, sugar, baking soda, salt, cocoa powder, vegetable oil, buttermilk, eggs, red food coloring, distilled white vinegar, and vanilla extract] mixed them together, and presto! You’ve got red velvet cake batter! Don’t you wish it was that easy ;)

red velvet, cake, mix, desserts, recipes

Bake this yummy goodness, after you’ve had a taste test of course, at 325º for 30-35 minutes. Once it’s done, allow it to cool and then cut it into pieces that’ll fit inside your dessert jars. I couldn’t find my circlular cookie cutter, so I just used my handy dandy pizza cutter! Whatever gets the job done!

red velvet cake, recipe, dessert, cake

Then, I did the same thing for the pound cake! My favorite of the two, but don’t tell anyone! Don’t forget to halve the recipe either!

pound cake, recipe, dessert, cake

After it cooled, I actually cut the pound cake in half and trimmed the edges. That way, it would show through the jar as a white cake instead of a brown crust.

pound cake, recipe, dessert, cake

Then, I made the frosting. Super easy! Just combine cream cheese, powdered sugar, a splash of milk, and some vanilla extract.

In your to-go dessert containers, layer red velvet cake, frosting, sprinkles, pound cake, and more frosting. Then do it all over again! Thanks to my friend Alysha for my super cute glass jars!

5 Minute Fix: Mediterranean Veggie Salad

Easy Summer Lunch

Just as Fresh as It Is Tasty!

The other day, I went on a scavenger hunt through my fridge. I was searching for something yummy, fresh, light, and healthy. I didn’t think it was possible to have all that in ONE meal, but whoa! Was I wrong?! This Mediterranean Veggie Salad is all that AND a bag of chips! Does anyone even say that anymore? Well, I just did! The combination of some of my favorite ingredients make for the perfect summer lunch that is quick and doesn’t hold back on the flavor.

I mean c’mon! Look at this pile o’ goodness!

Mediterranean Veggie Salad. A 5 minute fix that is just as fresh as it is tasty! | Mommie and Wee #summer #salad

The ingredients are inspired by the Mediterranean culture– chickpeas, roasted red peppers, feta cheese. There’s some regular old salad stuff in there too, like lettuce (duh!), red onion, cherry tomatoes and cucumbers. I threw some chopped eggs on there just for some protein. I know it’s a veggie salad but I needed a little something. I’m not a vegetarian, y’all. (Not judging those of you who are though!)

I decided to make a meal of it. Got some of my FAVORITE croutons (Texas Toast brand. They are soooooo good!) and some Kool-Aid. I didn’t have any other juice in the house :( But, the salad made up for it. It was just that good!

Oh! I made my favorite salad dressing too! Lots of favorites today! You ready for it?! Just mix Balsamic Vineagrette and Italian Dressing and you’ve made the best dressing. So quick! Sweet, tangy, easy, yummy.

WHAT’S IN MY KITCHEN: PEACHY PINEAPPLE-ADE POPSICLES!

A Homemade Popsicle Recipe

It’s summer time, and it’s hot! I was looking at my handy dandy weather app, and it’s supposed to be 95 degrees… toNIGHT! The sun will be down and it’ll still be that hot? You have got to be kiddin’ me! Living under the Texas sun, it’s only natural to crave something sweet to cool me off. Hence, this delicious icy treat!!! And, when I say ‘delicious’, trust me, I’m NOT over exaggerating! If I could have one of these popsicles every day, I wouldn’t mind this blistering heat! Any who, let me get to the mouth-puckering, tongue-tingling, oh-so-juicy goodness that I like to call Peachy Pineapple-ade Popsicles!

Peachy Pineapple-ade Popsicles! An easy summer treat I gotta try! with #printable |Mommie and Wee

I went to the craft store the other day, in search of some inspiration. Low and behold, I found a popsicle-making kit in the clearance aisle. You know I had to grab it. You can snag it for yourself HERE. I’ve seen so many popsicle recipes lately on my Pinterest feed and I was dying to try something of my own.

When I got home, I scavenged for some fruit so I could make some juicy concoction for these ‘sicles. Peaches. I just love peaches. So they HAD to be included in some way.

Peachy Pineapple-ade Popsicles! An easy summer treat I gotta try! with #printable |Mommie and Wee

Oh, and I had some other wonderfully juicy items laying around too, so I figured ‘why not”!

Peachy Pineapple-ade Popsicles! An easy summer treat I gotta try! with #printable |Mommie and Wee

In a blender, I pureed a can of peaches with the syrup. To that, I added the juice of 6 small lemons, and 1/2 cup of pineapple juice. Mix, mix, mix! I couldn’t resist but to taste. Can you say tropical vacation in a glass? Because I have an uber sweet tooth, I added some sugar, but you can leave that out… Goodie two shoes. You will have to add some water though. They’ll freeze better.

Into the popsicle molds this juice goes. Then, into the freezer. I left mine overnight. Run some water over those babies and out comes frozen gold!

Ahh, so good! And refreshing!

Want to make these popsicles for yourself? I’m telling you, they deserve a shot! Click HERE to download the recipe! Try it out and let me know how great they are! With Love, M&W.

WHAT’S IN MY KITCHEN: POPSICLE LEMONADOOO

When life gives you lemons, what do you do? Make lemonade, duh!

Well, I have a secret.

Actually, it’s more like a confession.

When life gave me lemons, I made THESE instead! Dee-lish! Totally worth the switch.

But I came to my senses had lemon juice left over and figured I should do what’s expected… make some lemonade! But not just any old lemonade…

Peachy Pineapple Lemonade: It’s To Die For.

How about we act like I originally snagged these lemony-yellow lemons for this recipe, though. Deal?

In this neck of the woods, lemonade is like liquid gold. It’s perfection. The ‘I’m so hot–I need something to cool me off–but water’s too plain’ summertime thirst quencher.

My hubbie LOVES lemonade. It’s the only drink he orders when we go out. So, that’s the main reason why he guzzled down this fruity fix.

And because this lemonade is just epic.

It has two of my favorite fruits–peaches and pineapple–so I knew it was going to be the bomb.

To make it, I added the used the juice mixture from THIS recipe for Peachy Pineapple-ade Popsicles. To that, I added 1/2 cup sugar, 2 quarts of water, and a lid full of Country Time Lemonade Mix. It’s that easy.

And I’m telling you, this was the best lemonade I ever tasted. No lie.

And my baby wanted some too.

YUMMM… A HALLOWEEN ‘TRAIL-MIX-Y’ TREAT

halloween mix collage

Can you believe I haven’t said a word about it being fall. I know, major blogger sin. But, I didn’t want to bombard you with the obvious.

I will say though, fall is one of my favorite times of year. Not because of all the pumpkin desserts. [With my family, we choose sweet potato over pumpkin anyways.] And, not because of the cute fall outfits either. But, I am a sucker for oversized sweaters and boots.

Fall is one of my favorite times of year because of what it means… Winter is right around the corner! It’s almost that time to be with loved ones and stuff your face just for the fun of it. I love the symbolism behind the fall/winter holidays. Cliche Hallmark moments are my ‘thing’.

Fall is the prettiest time too! Down here in Tejas we don’t get much snow, so I’m happy to at least have the leaves change colors. I absolutely hate cold weather, so fall is def a happy medium. I’m a wimp when it comes to being cold.

[currently sporting fuzzy, uber warm and cozy leopard print slippers]

I’m an even bigger wimp when it comes to Halloween. I’m so not a risk-taker. Halloween = a holiday full of scary stuff. Shall I say… risque. See what I did there. ;)

I mean, I’m a total scary movie buff, but when it comes to real life… No thank you. I’ll pass on the haunted house invites.

Since I’ll be a lame-o and stay at home with the girls, watching scary movies instead of trying to live them out, I made the perfect treat, no tricks involved!

hand full of fall

I didn’t really know what to call it. It’s like trail mix, but not really. Poppycock maybe? Nah. I think that word is so awk. It’s just.. all the things that I love about fall in one. big. bite.

Kettle corn. That’s all you need to say, and I’m in. Any where. Any time.

I found these Pumpkin Spice M&Ms at Target and I just had to give them a try. SIDENOTE: Eff you Target, because I always walk out with everything I don’t need. Not even a little bit. ENDNOTE.

Raisins, I just had to add them. I’m obsessed with Oatmeal Raisin cookies… anything oatmeal raisin actually. Like these. I swear they were gone after like a day. Sooo good.

Fall screams apples, so I had to throw some of those in there too. Freeze dried apple chips actually. Thanks again, Target.

Mix it all up. Add more of what you like, less of what you don’t. Definitely a better option than binging on your kids’ candy.

Or you could do that. Your pick.

What are your Halloween plans? What is your favorite thing about fall?

I got the girls matching Halloween outfits. Follow me on the Gram to see their pic! Let me know what you think! Happy Halloween, Boo-tiful! With Love, M&W.

Such a cute, festive, yummy idea! I love coming up with snacks that go along with the season or Holiday. Me personally, I’d rather Fall stick around a little longer and put off winter. I’m not ready for the COLD weather yet!

FALL ENTERTAINING | APPLE CIDER THREE WAYS

apple cider collage

I have to admit something.

I absolutely HATE cold chilly any less-than-warm weather. Like really?! Cloudy, rainy, chilly, snowy weather is not my thing.

Now you know why I’m obsessed with tea. Chai tea to be exact.

Even though tea is my absolute fav thing to warm my soul, I do love a good cup of apple cider. It’s the perf reminder of fall and the holiday season that is quickly approaching!

Because, we all know, October went by way too quickly!

This year, I think my friends and I are going to get together and have a dinner a couple days before Thanksgiving. And if that’s the case, I’m going to be on kitchen duty. I’m always on kitchen duty.

What better thing to make to start a party than apple cider, three ways. So holiday-esque.

cider ingredients collage

And it’s super simple to make. All you need is…

x 3 cups apple cider (more or less)
x 1 orange
x some cloves. whole cloves.
x 2 cinnamon sticks
x an oven, a pot, and your hands, my friend.

Take the cloves, and stick them in the peel of the orange until it looks like a weird polka dotted orange ball. Throw that in a pan with your cider and cinnamon sticks and let that sucker simmer. I usually let it go for like an hour, or whenever I decide I want to come back to it.

SIDENOTE: this makes for an amazingly delicious home fragrance. Just saying.

Now, about this whole ‘three-way’ thing…

mommie and wee, fall entertaining

If you want your cider hot, pour it in a super cute mug (I just love this glass mug I snagged from Tarje!!) and call it a day.

Super easy right?!

mommie and wee, fall entertaining

Cold apple cider isn’t any harder, I promise. You’ll just have to wait a little bit, hunn.

Pour your cider into a pitcher and put it on ice. Allow it to cool down a bit, then stick it in the fridge. Or freezer, depending on how thirsty you are.

When the cider is done, pair it with a pretty straw to jazz things up a bit.

And now for the star of the party!!

mommie and wee, fall entertaining

Yassss!! Okay, so when I make a big pitcher of this stuff, I add 1 Redd’s Apple Ale for every 1.5 cups of cider. (You don’t have to be as heavy handed as me of course, but hey, it’s Friday!!)

Adding some Southern Comfort doesn’t hurt either.

Stir that all up, pour it into a glass and top it with a splash of simple syrup to even things out. (I bought some at the store, but you can definitely make it on the stove with sugar and water.)

For entertaining, I always sex my drink up with frozen apple slices (as my ice! I know right, sooo fetch!) and line the rim with gold glitter sprinkles. We all know I’m the gold glitter queen.

Add a cinammon stick for stirring and a sprinkle of cinnamon for color and you’ve got one heck of a party drink!

You can’t go wrong with apples and caramel dip on the side, either. My fav fall snack.
